As of 13th Feb 2011 the Sani Pass is closed due to a massive rock fall.
Estimates are a few days to a week , depending on the response of the authorities and the time it takes the necessary equipment to arrive on site. All that use the pass on a daily basis, tourists, traders and migrant labour are used to the odd closure, mostly due to snow in the winter that can last from 3 to 15 days.
Reports also say that the A31 road between Sani Top and Mokhotlong (the section just past the sheep shed after Black Mountain) also suffered a rock slide of it’s own recently following heavy rains.
Alternative Border posts are between half a day and a days drive away, depending on your final destination. The Caledonsport Border post, near Fouriesburg is recommended for people still wishing to access Mokhotlong and Katse Dam areas. For the more adventurous, Ramatseliso’s Gate, Qacha’s Neck and Ongeluksnek Boarder posts provide access to the southern regions, including Sehlabathebe National Park.

The Sani Pass has been reopened and functioning as per normal according to the SA border post officials.
