“Tough ultra-endurance athletes take on the Malutis

Now known as one of Southern Africa’s toughest 50km and 38km courses, Lesotho Ultra Trail goes into its 5th year in 2017 attracting a top class local and international field once again. Classed as an Ultra Skymarathon© because it exceeds 45 kilometers in length and 2500 meters in vertical gain at high altitude, it’s a challenge for even the toughest of participants.

Set in the towering Maluti Mountain Range at the beautiful Maliba Lodge, the event has all the makings of a great destination race, “Getting to the race from South Africa is relatively easy, but there is a strong sense of adventure that grips you once you enter Lesotho. It’s a very different country to South Africa offering endless mountains and open landscapes to explore. Lesotho Ultra Trail makes the most of this with the course adventuring to over 3200m above sea level for parts of it” said the race director, Andrew Booth.

Raidlight South Africa are particularity excited as they come on board in 2017 for the first time as the race apparel sponsor “Lesotho Ultra has built itself a great reputation in the trail running community as a tough challenge in a beautiful country. We are very excited to attend and participate in the race which is a great match for Raidlight, a dedicated trail running brand brought into South Africa by trail runners and for trail runners” said Anthony Rush who heads up Raidlight South Africa.

The race is also embedded into the local community with much of the support and logistics for the race relying on local structures. Mountain donkeys are used to transport much needed hydration and nutrition into the mountains to serve the participants along the way. “This is a special and unique event that exposes what Lesotho is all about to the world, we are very proud presenting sponsors” said Tsokolo Makeka from Metropolitan Lesotho.”

There are only a handful of entries remaining for the 2017 event, visit www.lesothoultratrail.com for more information.”
